How Painting a Door Can Transform a Space

Hey friends! It has been awhile, but I am so happy to be back and sharing some awesome home + faith inspiration with you! Cameron and I have been homeowners for one year now and although our house was new construction, there are some improvements we are excited to make. When we chose paint colors for our home, we kept it very simple with Sherwin Williams Pure White in most of the space. I knew that eventually I would want to change colors and add my touch to the place, so I didn’t want to get ahead of myself a year ago by choosing paint colors I wasn’t sure about yet.

With that, I feel like the time is right to start adding in pops of color. Since we have all been staying home a lot more lately, this has given me a lot of time to work on some of the projects that Cameron and I have been wanting to do. We started with painting our back door this week.

This door was originally white and I felt like it really needed some color. I wasn’t sure what color I wanted to do at first. Our home is very neutral with lots of blues and dark colors to contrast with the white. I love to bring the outside in as well so I felt like adding in some natural colors would be perfect for our space. I ended up going with Valspar’s Seafoam Storm that we bought from our local Lowe’s Home Improvement Store. The door didn’t need sanding. I just made sure to clean it well to get off any excess dirt or dust, and then I started painting. I was able to knock it out in just a few hours!

I ended up painting the outside of the door as well. I didn’t choose an exterior paint because our door is mostly protected from the outside elements by the overhang roof on our back deck. I used the same mixture as the inside of the door.

As you can see, I got some paint on the molding where the door closes, so I had to touch that up with some of the white paint that we have. I didn’t use painter’s tape because I often find it to be more time-consuming and a nuisance than what it is worth. For bigger projects, sometimes it is necessary, but for this, I opted against it mainly because I knew I had touch-up white paint, and if I were to get any paint on the actual window, it would scrap off easily with a razor blade.

This is the finished product before I styled it. I put on two coats of paint. I was able to apply the second coat just 1-2 hours after the first coat. It was dry to the touch so I felt confident that I could go ahead and apply the next coat.

Here’s the finished product! I waited 24 hours before adding my wreath. I changed out the picture that I had hanging to the right of the door because the teal clashed with the color of the door. I added two prints from a local home decor shop that I have been eyeing for quite awhile and I LOVE how the color of the door brings out the green in the prints. Painting this door has really livened up this corner of the house and I can’t believe I waited so long to do it. I love the touch of nature that it brings in from the outside. It’s the perfect contrasting compliment to the white walls.

If you have been thinking about painting a door in your home, I say do it! It adds so much character and can really transform a space. Next, I am planning to paint the back of the front door (the side that we see in our living room) and possibly the door leading to our garage.
